Best Places to Visit in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is a country that is full of history, culture and stunning scenery. It's also home to some of the world's best beer bars and restaurants.

If you're planning a trip to Amsterdam or other parts of the country then we have compiled this list of ten places you should visit while you're there:

Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands. It has a population of around 600,000 inhabitants which makes it one of the most densely populated cities in Europe.

Amsterdam is also known for its many museums, art galleries, theatres and concert halls that showcase Dutch masters like Rembrandt van Rijn and Vermeer to contemporary artists like Vincent van Gogh.

Amsterdam also has some excellent shopping options including designer boutiques selling everything from jewellery to clothing labels by well-known designers such as Giorgio Armani or Louis Vuitton.

In addition to being an artistic centre with multiple museums featuring artworks from all eras throughout history (including masterpieces by Rembrandt), Amsterdam also has plenty going on outside its shores including concerts at venues like Ziggo Dome or festivals like Pinkpop Festival that attract tens of thousands fans annually!

Rotterdam

Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe and one of the most important cities in Netherlands. It is also one of its biggest tourist destinations, with more than 3 million tourists visiting annually.

The city was founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1628 as a trading post for spices and other goods from Asia. It grew rapidly as an important centre for international trade, commerce and culture because of its location on an estuary that allowed large ships to dock at its port facilities.

Today Rotterdam has become a major centre for science and technology; it hosts several research institutes including Philips Research Laboratories Nederland (PHL) which has developed many innovations such as fibre optic cables or solar panels used on satellites orbiting Earth or moon landings by astronauts like Neil Armstrong who walked on foot across lunar surface during Apollo 11 mission back in 1969

Giethoorn

Giethoorn

Giethoorn is a village in the province of Overijssel. It's a popular place for tourists, who come to see its unique canal system. The canal system was built in the 16th century, and today it still functions as an important part of Dutch life.

Giethoorn has a population of around 1,500 people—and it's one of those places where you can feel like you're visiting an old-world town that hasn't changed much since their heyday centuries ago! There are many different things to do here:

from exploring the canal system itself (there are some great hiking trails along them) to visiting nearby farms where they sell produce grown on their land; from spending time browsing through shops selling artisanal goods made locally by craftsmen using traditional methods like basket weaving or painting ceramics onsite...the list goes on!

Utrecht

Utrecht

Utrecht is a city in the Netherlands. It's the capital of the province of Utrecht, as well as one of its biggest cities with nearly 350,000 people living there. It's also one of Europe’s oldest cities and home to many universities.

Utrecht was founded by Germanic tribes around 1200 AD when they settled on this land after being exiled from Germany by Charlemagne (King Charles). Today you can still see parts of these old Roman walls which were built over 2 centuries ago; they're still standing today!

Maastricht

Maastricht

Maastricht is a city in the southern part of the Netherlands. It's known for its canals and bridges, which connect it to its neighbors Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg.

The city was founded by Julius Caesar in 50 BC, but didn't become a major trading hub until 1065 when it became part of what was then known as "Germany." In 1240 it became part of what would later be called "the Low Countries" (which includes Flanders).

Zaandam

Zaandam

Zaandam is a town in the Netherlands, located on the north coast of the Zaan River. It is one of several towns and villages that lie along this river. The municipality includes four other locations: Kijkduin (partly), Heerde and Leiderdorp.

Zaandam has been inhabited since prehistory; it was originally called “Neder” or “Nederstroom” – meaning “lower stream/river” – but became known as "Zaande" when its name was first recorded during Roman rule in what today is known as Belgium.

Kinderdijk

Kinderdijk

Kinderdijk is a village in the Netherlands, located on an island in the IJsselmeer lake. It's one of the most popular destinations for tourists thanks to its World Heritage Site status and picturesque location.

The village has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 due to its historic architecture and nature conservation efforts. One of its main highlights is the windmill museum:

Dutch windmills were used for centuries until they were replaced by modern turbines in 1848 (the first wind turbine was built here). You can learn about these innovations at this historic site!

Kinderdijk also has several cafes, restaurants and hotels where you can enjoy some delicious food or just relax after exploring all day long without getting tired anymore :)

Leiden

Leiden

Leiden is a city in the Netherlands. It's known for its university, canals and historic buildings, but it also has a population of about 120,000 people who call it home.

Leiden is not just any old city: it's known as "de Stad van Licht" or "the City of Light." This nickname comes from its history of being an important center for science and education in Europe during the 17th century. The University of Leiden has been around since 1425!

Volendam

Volendam

Volendam is a small village in the North Holland province of the Netherlands. It is located on Lake Markermeer, and its traditional wooden houses stand out from other Dutch towns because they are built entirely out of wood.

The village was founded in 1350 by fishermen who wanted to escape the harsh winters at sea by building their homes closer to land, where they would be able to enjoy fresh food year-round.

The town's famous fishing boats can still be seen today: these wooden boats have been used since 1506 when Volendam was first established as a fishing port (the word "Volendam" translates into English as “go away from here”).

These original craft are still being built today using traditional methods and materials such as oak, spruce branches and pine needles—they're even painted with red ochre paint!

Haarlem

haarlem netherlands

Haarlem is a city in the Netherlands, located on the banks of the Veluwezoombeek river. It's home to around 100,000 people and has been around since 1230 when it was founded by Henry I van Beijeren (hence its name). The city has many attractions such as:

  • The Kloveniersdoelen or "Clowns Dancer", who performs every night at 9pm from April-September.
  • The Oude Kerk (Old Church), built between 1445 and 1450 by Nicolaes de Jonghe II as part of his work as painter and stonemason for William II van Egmont.
